Be the Bigger Person
Poetry
It is their favorite phrase when they are not sure what to say
The catch all for every falling out, every disagreement-
Be the bigger person.
To be frank, I am sick of that shit.
What if the bigger person in this situation was the asshole?
They usually are-
What if I am a gentle giant whose feelings have been hurt for the last time?
What if I scream “I TAKE THE MORAL HIGH GROUND IN CONFRONTATION” ?
That might just do it.
No, “be the bigger person” has done nothing for me,
It only gives people space to play with me
Leaving my heart bleeding on the daily
I want to be the smaller person
Convinced that their size earns them protection from reality-
Their ignorance is blissful.
Yes every small counterpart to something
Little siblings, little animals- little projects
Coming with entitlement and endless lessons
How fortunate to receive compassion
Whilst offering nothing in return
And expecting more, always.
I’ll whisper “i dont give a fuck how you feel,”
I’ll be the mouse in the den you forget about
After fighting to get me out
You’ll find my tiny droppings everywhere
Somehow the less I appear the more my presence
Grows in your head-
Think to yourself, which one are you?
Do you take up space
Or do you remain passive in your corner?
