Strange Roots
graphite pencil

Owning the body of a black woman at some point was the same as owning cattle or an orchard. Its existence was to be used to the very last stretch of its life, for any and all purposes. Pleasure, harvesting, branding- utilitarian in nature, and most importantly not human.

Owning a black woman’s body today doesn’t require the same exploitation, though the implication remains the same. Keep the roots so she continues to fruit, but chop off her head to keep her from objecting, effectively.
